About Collingham
About Collingham
Collingham is an independent, co-educational GCSE and Sixth Form college, which was founded in 1975. Our aim is to enable individuals to discover their strengths, set their own goals and develop their potential and confidence. At the same time, we are uncompromising in our commitment to academic standards, personal integrity and the development of a sense of responsibility. We provide expert tuition, a clear structure of work and a supportive, adult environment.
There are about two hundred and fifty students at Collingham, from different backgrounds and across the ability range. Most of our students are between 14 and 19 years of age and those who join for GCSE generally continue with AS and A levels. Collingham is registered with the Department for Education and Science, inspected by the British Accreditation Council (BAC) and is a member of the Conference for Independent Further Education (CIFE).
Premises
The main building at 23 Collingham Gardens, where all the A level teaching takes place, overlooks a quiet garden square in Kensington. The grand housing schemes in this area of Kensington date from the 1880’s and the college itself, originally a large private house, is a spacious and well proportioned building, with fine classical friezes and other mouldings.
Formerly Gibbs’ Preparatory School, the building has been in continuous educational use since 1925, and has been refurbished and extended over the years. It has twenty-seven classrooms, a large study room, extensively-equipped Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Computer laboratories, a purpose-built art studio with facilities for drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking, a language laboratory, audio and audio-visual resources, and a Photography Darkroom. All students have access to photocopying and computer facilities and the Internet. There is a small canteen in the basement where sandwiches, snacks and hot drinks are freshly made to order.
The GCSE department is at 17 Queen’s Gate Place, very close to the Natural History Museum. In addition to classrooms, the building has a photography dark room, a supervised study room, coffee room, audio-visual resources, photocopying and computer facilities. Students go to the main building for practical lessons in Art and Science.
Outside Collingham
Collingham’s position in central London offers access to valuable additional resources. Art and Art History groups regularly visit galleries, keeping up to date with current exhibitions. Politics groups visit the Houses of Parliament and Law groups the Law Courts. Media Studies students are taken to television recording studios, English and Theatre Studies groups visit the theatre. Modern Languages students benefit from the nearby French Institute and Goethe Institute. Outside London, our Geography and Biology students go on field trips, for example to Epping Forest and the Isle of Wight. The Art History and Modern Languages departments also regularly organise study trips abroad, for example to Paris, Amsterdam and Florence.
Extra-curricular activities
All Collingham students can join ETHOS, the Imperial College Sports Centre in Kensington, and use the sporting facilities, gym, swimming pool, squash and tennis courts. There is also a regular Wednesday evening football game played on Astroturf, open to all students. Many departments organise cinema and theatre visits. At the end of the academic year, Activities Week provides a range of opportunities for students to take part in enjoyable learning activities such as a charity walk, the production of a magazine, Art and Drama Workshops and work experience.
