Spanish

The Subject

At Collingham classes are conducted mainly in Spanish, the emphasis being placed on the practical use of the language, as well as on accuracy of pronunciation, spelling and grammar.

Why Spanish ?

If you choose Spanish for AS or A level, you will study the Spanish language and the cultures of Spain and Spanish-speaking countries. You will also be introduced to literature in Spanish, and may choose to make a particular text or author the subject of a coursework project. Spanish is no longer necessarily a "literary" A level subject, though, and there are numerous other options, including politics, technology, social issues, the European Union, history, commerce. Spanish AS/A level combines well with most other subjects. Those who are interested in literature may choose to study Spanish alongside English and other languages. On the other hand, increasing numbers of students want to use Spanish for professional purposes, given the growing importance of the Spanish-speaking world in business and commerce. These students often decide to study Spanish alongside Economics, Business Studies, Accountancy or Media Studies. A command of a second language is an advantage in any field, and you may simply feel that you would like to have the qualification even if you are not sure whether you will use Spanish on an everyday basis in the future. Spanish AS/A level appeals to those who enjoy communicating and are curious about other languages and cultures. Learning languages successfully involves a mixture of logic and creativity, and therefore appeals to students who like to see quantifiable progress and derive satisfaction from getting things right, but also enjoy being able to express themselves in their own way. A GCSE in Spanish at grade B or above is normally required before joining the course.

The course

Topics covered in the course of the first year are: Day to Day Matters (including food and health, transport and tourism, current affairs), Society (family, youth concerns, law and leisure) and The Working World (education and employment, business, IT).

The AS level examination involves a listening, reading comprehension and writing paper (in both cases students are required to respond, mainly in Spanish, to recorded or printed material in Spanish), and an oral test on a prepared topic. The topic areas covered in the A2 course are the Environment and Citizenship and the International Context.

The A level examination comprises the two AS units and, in addition, an oral discussion of issues, and a further paper in which the skills of listening, reading and writing are all tested. This paper includes a question on a literary text, play, film or cultural topic that the student has studied in depth during the course.
