Cife Ceremony held at the House of Lords with awards presented by Baroness Perry
Collingham students Crystal van Oosterom, Georgina Wilkin and Omar Asfar have won three of the prestigious prizes awarded annually by CIFE for outstanding performance in the summer A level examinations.
Crystal van Oosterom was awarded a prize for academic excellence across the board in all her subjects: A level French, Economics, Mathematics and AS level Biology. Her total scores in her A level subjects were: French 576/600, Economics 513/600 and Maths 569/600 – including scores of 100% in five units. Crystal’s achievements are all the more impressive given that she is only 16 years old and took all her A level courses in one year She has secured a place to read Economics with Management at Oxford University for autumn 2010.

Georgina Wilkin won a prize for excellence in the Creative Arts. She gained a near-perfect score of 580/600 in History of Art A level, and 575/600 for her A level Fine Art. Her final art work piece included insects which she had embalmed using an amazingly intricate technique. Georgina studied for her A levels in one year, while simultaneously working part-time as a fashion model.

Omar Asfar was awarded the College prize for his contribution to the life of the College during the two years he was here. Omar joined Collingham in September 2008, after previously being educated in the USA. He took A level course in History, Politics and Philosophy over two years, achieving three A grades. In his first year, he also gained a B grade at AS level Latin.
Omar played an active part in all student activities, including participating in debates and playing competitive chess; he was always keen to engage in discussions and to investigate both historical events and philosophical issues, often by means of interrogating willing tutors whom he intercepted in the hall! His enthusiasm for study and scholarship often served to help and encourage fellow students, especially at moments when their morale might have been flagging temporarily.
Omar gained a place to study Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Oxford, where he is thoroughly enjoying the opportunities to explore his subjects using the extraordinary wealth of resources available through the university. He will also, doubtless, play a major role in the life of the student Common Room and the Students’ Union.
Collingham to offer extended project
The Extended Project is an exciting new qualification, designed to stretch students’ learning and to provide them with a range of skills that will be particularly valuable at A level and beyond. It also provides the opportunity to achieve extra UCAS points, which universities are increasing using as a means of differentiating between top-level applicants.
Collingham will be offering the Extended Project to a small number of students for the first time in 2009 -2010.
Information about the Extended Project can be found at www.edexcel.com
Further details are available from the Director of Studies, Susan Oussedik.
Collingham Fees Frozen
Collingham has decided to freeze the fees for 2009-2010 at the 2008-2009 level, as a gesture of undertsanding that some fee-payers may face difficulties in the current economic climate.

Rome Trip
The A2 History of Art students enjoyed an exciting study trip to Rome over half-term. Their objective was to extend their knowledge of Baroque art and architecture, under the supervision of their tutor, Brooke McGowan. A programme of visits to galleries, museums and churches proved exhilarating, awe-inspiring and exhausting... and fun.
A Collingham Play
The Collingham Theatre Studies A level students gave performances of their devised pieces at the Tara Theatre in November. The evening provided a showcase of the students’ achievements in writing, directing, designing and acting. Our thanks to the tutor, Lucy Bellingham, for her inspirational teaching, and to the staff of the Tara for their help and support.

Musical Evening 2008
The Musical Evening on 10th December 2008 provided a diversity of musical performances from some talented students and tutors. Particularly memorable was the soulful rendition of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujahby Alice Ballantine Dykes, accompanied by Richard Collins, which foreshadowed (and we think, surpassed) the subsequent No. 1 Hit. Other noteworthy contributions were made by James Lawton, playing guitar and singing one of his own compositions, Will Heard and Jack Broome improvising jazz on saxophone and piano, and singers Aine Pullan and David Oyebanji .
The evening finished with a stirring selection of Folksongs from the Balkans, courtesy of the visiting Gadjanski sisters, before performers and audience returned to more seasonal matters by singing Silent Night.
A total of £319 was raised for Cancer Research-UK. We thank all those who bought tickets or made contributions.

COLLINGHAM STUDENT WINS THE FRAYLING PRIZE!
MORAG WILLIAMS, a Collingham sixthformer, has won the prestigious FRAYLING PRIZE, awarded by Professor Sir Christopher Frayling, Rector of the Royal College of Art. It is awarded every year for the best piece of work submitted from schools across the country. The works selected were exhibited at the Royal College of Art, and Morag received her prize at a special evening ceremony on Tuesday 13th May.
Another Collingham student, NICOLAS HUZELLA was one of the highly commended runners-up.

CIFE GOLD AWARD FOR EMMA BIGGS
The Council for Independent Further Education has awarded the annual prize for the highest-achieving student in any CIFE College to a Collingham student, Emma Biggs. The prestigious Gold Award is decided on A level results and all-round academic achievement. Emma’s results in three A levels and two AS subjects last summer included nine exam unit marks of 100%. The Awards Committee was particularly impressed by Emma’s ranking among the top ten in the country for A level Chemistry, and the breadth of her achievements, which included AS Art. Emma, who is now reading Natural Sciences at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, will collect her prize at a CIFE special reception in February.
