Crystal has achieved three A grades at A level after only one year’s study, at the tender age of 16.  She arrived from Monaco in September 2008, having already obtained a French bacccalaureat (mention Bien), and determined  to gain a place at Oxford.  Thanks to her resilience, determination and exceptional ability, she has achieved her goal, and has a place to read Economics and Management at Lady Margaret Hall next year.  In the meantime, she plans to spend a semester at the European Business School followed by an internship in a bank in the Far East

Omar Asfar

Though challenged by a move from Texas, Omar managed to settle quickly into the British system. As a result, he has managed to attain three As in history, politics and philosophy and thus a place at Regent’s Park College at the University of Oxford to read History and Politics. Apart from a great love for his subjects (notably history), he is also a keen opera and theatre enthusiast.  He is likely to study Arabic later this summer at the University of Beirut.

Jemima joined Collingham  in January 2008, for accelerated  A level courses.  Her passion for the visual arts and their underlying conceptual basis fuelled her artistic practice.  Jemima achieved A grades in all her English AS and A2 modules.  She wrote a compelling piece of A2 coursework on the use of descriptive detail in Ian McEwan’s Atonement that was awarded 100%.

Georgina Wilkin

 

History of Art A

Art A

Georgina came to Collingham with A grades in Biology and Design Technology at A level, as well as 9 A* at GCSE. To this she has now added two further A* grades at A level. After one-year courses she has scored 575/600 in Art, and 580/600 in History of Art, including 300/300 for the AS units. She found time during the year to do some modelling in Italy, and is now working as Assistant Editor of a London-based magazine, before applying for Art College.

 

One-year Pre-Medical Programme

This year, our two mature students (who had already taken degrees in other disciplines) were successful in gaining the science qualifications they required to enter Medical School.

Both Finola Brooke –Williams and Lily Collins achieved A grades at A level Chemistry and As at AS level Biology.  They will both be starting at UCL Medical School this autumn.

Having achieved three A grades in English, Psychology, and Film Studies, Millie will be doing a journalism course during her Gap year, and is applying to university to read English. She has made three independent short films, for which she wrote the scripts.

Having got A grades in English, History, and Politics, Lucy is taking up her place at Trinity College Oxford to read English. Her hobbies include music, ballet, and fencing.

 

FREDERICK DONOGHUE

Frederick joined Collingham after two years of working as an insurance broker in the City. He had taken his GCSEs at Ampleforth and then decided to go out to work.

Frederick came to Collingham with the ambitious aim of doing two A levels in one year. He took English and Film Studies and gained grade A in both subjects. He showed an encyclopaedic knowledge and a deep interest in film and achieved his goal of gaining a place at film school

Posy is about to leave for a Gap year in Cuba, where she will learn Spanish and teach English. She plans to read English at university in 2009.

Laura’s talent for portrait painting will be long remembered! She is travelling to Cuba to begin a Gap year and plans to take a Foundation course in Art next year.

 

CHRISTABEL STIRLING

Music A

Christabel came to Collingham after achieving three A grades at A level at St Mary’s School, Ascot, in June 2006, and successfully completing a year’s Foundation Course at Camberwell School of Art. She took Music as a one-year A level course. Her A grade is testimony to her hard work, talent and commitment. She has gained a place to read Music at King’s College, London.

 

 

ASAKO TOMITA

Asako came to Collingham following in the footsteps of her older sister Makiko. She was not able to join us from Japan until January last year and worked with immense dedication to achieve her 3 grade A’s. She is now deciding whether to go on to University here or in Japan. She also found the time to continue with her dance studies and to dance at the Royal Albert Hall in their ‘Classic Spectacular’

Taejoon came to us from South Korea and worked incredibly hard to gain his 3 grade A’s. TJ is also a top class athlete who has represented the UK in table tennis and is now planning to take a GAP year prior to going on to University.

In addition to gaining 4 A levels at age 16, Andrew achieved a Merit in his AEA Latin. He is applying to Oxford to read Classics and English. Meanwhile he will continue working for the charity Active Planet during his Gap year. Andrew is a keen opera-goer, and has played tennis at junior county level.

During her Gap year Kiloran is going to Damascus to study Arabic. Her interests are varied, including dance (Scottish reel, salsa, modern jive) and playing bridge, and she has won prizes for public speaking and shooting.

MARY DOUGLAS-HOME

Philosophy A

Mary got A grades in English and Politics at Collingham back in 2001. After several years as a professional musician, playing keyboards and writing songs for the band Headland, she decided that the time had come to resume her academic studies. She has now got her third grade A at A level, achieving full marks in three units. She is going to King’s College London to read English. Her experiences while performing, studying, and teaching music ranged from playing on the Eiffel Tower and at the Glastonbury Festival to singing in the Royal College of Music choir.

Katie achieved A grades in both History and English in January 2008, after taking a short retake course. Her grades meant that she could spend the Spring and Summer terms travelling round the world, before embarking upon a degree course in Religious Studies at Edinburgh University.

Alasdair returned to his studies after leaving school a few years ago with GCSEs. He took one-year courses in Government and Politics and Psychology as well as completing his A2 English Literature outside Collingham. He has a place to read English at Sussex University.

Ana took her GCSEs at Collingham before joining the A level department in 2006. She has a place to read English at Leeds.

As well as gaining A grades in his three A-level subjects, Martin has good AS levels in Music, French, and Biology. He is going to UCL to read Classics.

Alex came to us from Georgia where at the age of 13 he showed his early promise in Maths by coming 1st in the Georgian Mathematical Olympiad. Alex has many skills, including being a three times Georgian national tennis champion and a passionate and skilled chess player.
