MOD international crisis scenario

On Monday 4th December our Geography and Politics students were faced with the challenge of solving an international crisis scenario in a Ministry of Defence role play workshop.

Students were divided into groups and took on political leadership roles, including Prime Minister, International Development Secretary, Foreign Secretary and Defence Secretary. The groups were presented with the Global Crisis scenario to be solved via fictional news coverage of the unfolding crisis. In the far away country 'Dacan', UK nationals are trapped, diplomacy is failing and the humanitarian situation is worsening. The Government must act fast in order to rescue the nationals and address the humanitarian situation.

Each group was tasked with solving the impending global crisis. They each shouldered their new political roles and rose to the challenge admirably. Within their groups, the students worked together to formulate an action plan, drawing on their existing geopolitical knowledge to make informed decisions. The groups then participated in an interactive press conference, presenting their action plans, and taking questions from the ‘media’.

The role play workshop was organised by the award-winning Ministry of Defence Education Outreach Programme. It provided an opportunity for students to expand their knowledge and understanding of the role of the UN, the duties of governments as a whole and the key responsibilities of members of the cabinet.
